Recovery

Communication keys need a recovery path that does not depend on a single device or a centralized account provider.

Recovery is configured once during onboarding and governs how a user regains access if a device, key, or wallet is lost. Proposed recovery paths include:

  • a secondary wallet;
  • a passkey;
  • smart-account recovery;
  • an encrypted backup;
  • recovery guardians;
  • time-delayed key replacement.

The recovery key described in Key Management is the credential these paths ultimately authorize — restoring or rotating a user's messaging and identity keys without requiring the original wallet-control key to be exposed.
