Recovery
Communication keys need a recovery path that does not depend on a single device or a centralized account provider.
Updated August 2026 · 3 minute read
Recovery is configured once during onboarding and governs how a user regains access if a device, key, or wallet is lost. Proposed recovery paths include:
- a secondary wallet;
- a passkey;
- smart-account recovery;
- an encrypted backup;
- recovery guardians;
- time-delayed key replacement.
The recovery key described in Key Management is the credential these paths ultimately authorize — restoring or rotating a user's messaging and identity keys without requiring the original wallet-control key to be exposed.
